The NSW Government has granted North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club $412,000 for upgrades to its internal pool as well as new solar panels, battery storage and pool heating system.
Wanda Surf Life Saving Club has also been granted $148,000 for its watercraft and surf sports equipment storage system.
The grants are part of the $3.6 million 2021-22 round of the Government’s Surf Club Facility Program.
This follows previous government grants of $570,000 to North Cronulla; $500,000 to Cronulla; $370,000 to Elouera and $400,000 to Wanda, towards facilities upgrades.
I’m delighted that the Government can help iconic institutions whose dedicated volunteers donate tens of thousands of hours each year to patrolling the beach to keep us safe, educating our kids on water safety and promoting healthy, active lifestyles for so many.
It’s important that the clubs have the modern facilities they need to do this work.
Eddy Boas is a Holocaust survivor.
Eddy was three months old when Nazi Germany invaded Holland in 1940. He was three years old when he was sent with his family to a concentration camp. Of 107,000 Dutch Jews deported to concentration camps, only 5,000 survived - including Eddy, his parents and brother. Sadly his father died in 1948 (before Eddy and his family migrated to Australia).
Despite all the horrors of the Nazi regime, Eddy and other Holocaust survivors, and the Jewish community generally, still face today the deeply offensive and intimidating display of Nazi symbols. Those symbols are also deeply disturbing for the entire community – in particular groups victimised by the Nazi regime – including Christians, LGBTQIA+ people and people with disability – as well as for service men and women who’ve fought for our freedoms.
This week in NSW we created a long overdue criminal offence - knowingly display a Nazi symbol in public without a reasonable excuse.
The rights of Hindus, Buddhists and Jains to use a traditional religious symbol are also protected.
I was humbled when Eddy thanked me, colleagues Mark Coure and Gabrielle Upton, the Jewish Board of Deputies, the Hindu Council of Australia, and all those who have advocated for and supported this bill ... because we should be thanking Eddy Boas, for his courage, for continuing to share his extraordinary and moving story and for providing us with a better understanding of why this new law is so important. ... Eddy has a very important story to tell. Hopefully we embrace the lesson to be learnt.
You have made huge differences to our state in your role.
Great news, now we should apply such legislation across the board to other religions as well. No one should ever be subjected to such treatment whether they are Jewish, Muslim or Christian faith or otherwise. 🤲 ❤️✡️✝️☪️❤️
Amazing work
👍👍
Thank you.
I'm Jewish. My grandma's family fled eastern Europe to escape persecution of Jews. But this law seems really dumb to me. Surely it's better to be able to identify Nazi extremists? Won't this just make them hidden? Is there any EVIDENCE that this will actually reduce hate, racism and intolerance in society? Even if there is evidence that the swastika is "used as a recruitment tool", won't they now just switch to something else? (making surveillance and counter-terrorism activities more difficult) I'm open to persuasion but I just can't see how this will help.

Three Parliamentary days this week in the life of an Attorney General:
✅ Introducing a bill to create new offences with tough penalties for offenders who assault frontline health and emergency services workers.
✅ Introducing a bill to ensure offenders convicted of historical crimes are sentenced according to current sentencing patterns and practices.
✅ Passing a new law through both Houses making it a criminal offence to knowingly display a Nazi symbol in public without a reasonable excuse.
✅ Passing new laws through both Houses updating and enhancing the Ombudsman’s powers.
✅ Passing new laws through the Lower House governing elections, in preparation for the next State election on 25 March 2023 and to restore integrity to funding caps on third party campaigners.

✅ Community Legal Centres NSW Parliamentary showcase.
✅ 10 statements in the Lower House recognising achievers from the Cronulla electorate.

A great parliamentarian and a great AG!!
You are a doer! Hardworking and clever to boot. Thank goodness we have you representing us in NSW ⭐️
Thankyou AG for achieving & providing this staggering list. No surprise that when we put truly accomplished people in Parli we get accomplisments!
Well done Mark. 👏. Great outcomes for NSW.
Some don't have much to look back on achievement wise in Parliament. Few can reflect and say "I made a difference and significant change to protect the vulnerable" - you can certainly say that Mark Speakman.
Nsw government leading the way! Huge achievement 👏
Thank you, Mark Speakman for your hard work in continuously delivering for Cronulla and NSW.
Exceptional service to our state.
Congratulations led by the best
A big week for the AG and thankful that your dedication is focussed on the community.

Excellent work Mark - thank you!
Mark Speakman can you expand on the detail of the tougher penalties on assaults of health care and frontline emergency service workers please? I’m very interested in learning more about this. Cheers 👍🏼
Big week - thank you.
👏
👍👍
Axios, thank you Mark Speakman 👏⚖️🏛
when s10 is not the Magistrate‘s favourite outcome then, and only then will justice be balanced. Maximum sentencing is rarely handed down - emergency service workers are aware of the institutional barriers.
Please do something to back up the years of work heartache , personal funds and passion put in the create the ‘Brumby Bill’ to protect the handful of iconic Australian Brumbies of the high country. They are the victims of propaganda and hatred by those deflecting from the absolute destruction of vast areas of National Park by humans. NPWS failed completely to protect them or enact the bill. They are now decimating the remaining horses. 200 years they’ve lived in that country and now a few influential people have mounted a campaign of death. This is not what Australians want if they knew and saw the truth-

Welcome to the Gamay Rangers - Botany Bay as honorary National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) rangers in Kamay Botany Bay National Park and Towra Point Nature Reserve.
They’re the first NSW locations where an Aboriginal ranger organisation has been officially appointed as honorary rangers.
The Gamay Rangers will have the same operational authority as our excellent NPWS rangers and field officers, supporting conservation and compliance work (including protecting marine mammals) with their traditional knowledge and modern training.
This is a momentous partnership and a further step towards reconciliation. ... See MoreSee Less

🔴🟡 Men from culturally diverse backgrounds are over-represented in NSW coastal drownings. Swim Brothers was founded by Omar Mahmoud and Feroz Sattar to teach swimming and ocean safety after a group of men from a western Sydney mosque almost drowned in a rip and were saved by off-duty surf lifesavers.
🔴🟡 They’ve now partnered with Wanda Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving NSW to steer the graduation on the weekend of seven young Muslim men as lifesavers after achieving their Bronze Medallion.
🔴🟡 This ongoing initiative will improve ocean safety and promote community cohesion. ... See MoreSee Less

Thanks for coming out yesterday. We are humbled by your support & all the incredible organisations and people who’ve helped us in increasing representation, reducing drownings & leading community cohesion by example . We look forward to seeing you whilst we’re out on patrol this summer 🔴🟡
Great initiative.
I saw this on the news last night, what an outstanding program and so very important
Extremely Well Done by Wanda SLSC and all involved, a great program. Reminds me and takes me back to 2006-07 and the 'On the Same Wave' program with 20 male & female Muslim Australians. Broke new ground for inclusive water safety program.
Fantastic program 👏👏👏
Love this.

🌲 National Tree Day was the occasion to add 1000 new plants, all indigenous to local dunes, at the Greenhills hind dune, targeting bare areas.

Thanks Mark for your ongoing support of Sutherland Shire Bushcare and the Sutherland Shire Council Bushland Unit. You have definitely got your hands dirty numerous times over the years doing environmental works (tree planting, weeding etc) and your support has been greatly appreciated in regards to grant applications and funding requests. A special thanks to the SSC Bushcare staff and the wonderful Bushcare Volunteers for putting on an exceptional event.
