Prime Minister John Howard once said he had the second most important job in Australia, suggesting that the men’s cricket captaincy was the most important.
Bobby Simpson AO, who died today, has that job for two stints.
He was a test cricketer 1956-1968 and again 1977-1978, test captain 1963-1968 and 1977-1978 and national coach 1986-1996.
When test cricket was in crisis with the breakaway World Series Cricket, he came out of retirement aged 41 to lead his national side again. Later as national coach he reversed our ailing test fortunes.
